Tobacco abs

Nicotiana tabacum.

Grown and extracted in Bulgaria.

This is a beautiful perfumers ingredient. It's a very thick absolute--it will pour, but it should be warmed for ease of use. 

Obviously, most tobacco is destined for smoking, but a small fraction is processed into concrete and then an absolute

Nicotine free.

Arctander doesn’t have a lot of information on tobacco flower—in 1960 it was very rare indeed, and even rarer than it is today, apparently. It was my impression that tobacco leaf contained high nicotine levels but ours has tested as nicotine free.

Arctander describes tobacco absolute:

…a dark brown, semi-solid mass of strong, almost repulsive odor, faintly reminiscent of cigar tobacco. The odor is somewhat prohibitive for the extensive use of this material, but there are several decolorized or almost colorless products available. But extraction of the tobacco leaf material with special solvents, and subsequent co-distilling, a pale amber colored, viscous liquid is obtained. In dilution, it has a typical cigar-tobacco fragrance,

Tobacco leaf absolute is used not only in “tabac” type of modern or aldehydic petfumes, but also for “dry” or “masculine” effects in fantasy types, in Oriental blends, etc. These materials blend well with sandalwood, castoreum, labdanum, clary sage, vetiver, bergamot and cedarwood and produce effects that are very hard to match with other materials.
