The Lavender Field is a project of Earth Matter- a non-profit composting facility on Governors Island dedicated to encouraging neighborhood participation and leadership in composting.
Our Lavender Field provides visitors with a serene, deliciously fragrant oasis where they can set aside the stresses of city life. Over 500 plants grown without pesticides or chemicals, our 4 different varieties of French and English lavender provide sustenance for honey bees and other beneficial pollinators in the face of dwindling natural habitat and climate change stress.
The only lavender field in all 5 broughs of NYC, our blooms are planted in soil enriched with compost from New York City Compost Project hosted by Earth Matter and demonstrates one of the ways we nourish the earth and keep food waste out of New York City’s landfills.
