Product Description

Frankincense Kilo

Boswellia sacra essential oil distilled at our own facility in the Sultanate of Oman from wild gum-oleoresin. We hydro-distill in copper and usually have both “black” and “white” oils available.

The difference between black and white reflects the humidity and micro-climate of the trees. Frankincense trees grow in a few places in the wadis and mountains of Dhofar, Oman’s southern Governate. Many frankincense trees live outside of the reach of the annual monsoon, which comes every summer from India and makes the climate around Salalah cool, misty, and rainy, with flowing rivers and even waterfalls. This unique microclimate makes the hills and valleys lush and emerald green.

As a general rule, we can consider black frankincense to be resin that has come through the higher humidity areas. White, or howjary, can be generally considered to come from the drier areas, less affected by the monsoon.

That said, there is not always a huge differentiation in the harvest and as the resin comes off the mountain it will likely be in a mixed assortment. So the differences between the black and white might vary.

One is not “better” than the other, and each can be a favorite in turn.

Please don’t ask us if the properties of each are different. We don’t know and it’s subjective anyway.

Don’t overthink it. It's personal preference. They are both Boswellia sacra, also known as Sacred Frankincense, they are from the same areas, harvested in the same way. It’s a question of wind and mist.

Each kilo contains about 1100-1200 ml of essential oil.

GCs are shown above—please don’t ask us to interpret them. The alpha pinene is generally a little higher in the white—does that make a difference? It’s up to you. We don’t think so. Again, neither of these is “better” than the other, and to my knowledge, there are no studies on regarding comparative therapeutic properties. They are close siblings, and while they have many biological, chemical and taxonomic similarities, each expresses himself differently.

*Kilos ship UPS Ground but air freight requires a special Dangerous Goods designation. Therefore, International orders, as well as domestic expedited should contact us at info@enfleurage.com for shipping arrangements

I went on a frankincense journey in 2019 and wanted to try everyone's frankincense. They are all stunning. Here we have something different. something which is everything one dreams frankincense to be. resinous, penetrating, calming and amber, tree, church, temple god, goddess..If I had to choose between frankincense and patchouli..why would you ask me that! (Frankie) ha!
It would be sandalwood! the one from before. I bought a killo then and had it for many years..The Black is deep and gets your mind a bogglin and the white which I love makes me feel like a child in gods house. Cheers!
